Responding to relentless pressure to eliminate waste in order to better serve customers, enterprises are re-examining the way they move materials.  Key initiatives in this lean journey include:

  • Delivering smaller quantities of materials more often using lean carts to reduce excess material buffers in key work areas such as individual work cells, and
  • Restricting forklifts to use for vertical movement of materials and relying on electric tuggers and towable lean carts for horizontal movement of materials.
  • Increasing use of “milk runs” in order to reduce the burden on “water spiders” to supply assure that key functions have the materials they need when they need them.
  • Delivering materials via electric tuggers towing multiple lean carts, each destined to a different work station.
  • Combining drop off of full lean carts with pick up of empty lean carts in scheduled milk run cycles

Water Spider = Person assigned to support production, including replenishment of materials as needed.  Delivery is made on a variable schedule, depending on when materials are actually needed, and often this replenishment is of a standard, fixed quantity.

Milk Run = fixed time/variable quantity replenishment of materials.  Deliver is made on a fixed schedule (the way the “milk man” of old made milk deliveries – say every Tuesday and Friday morning) with the quantity delivered being dependent on the level of actual usage (i.e., the milk man dropped off the same number of full bottles as the number of empties that were left for him to pick up).

By far, the primary waste reduction opportunity lies in reduction of the size of the operation’s forklift fleet and the scope of a planned conveyor system, in favor of other tools such as electric burden carriers, electric tow vehicles and towable lean carts and towable pallet jacks, carrying materials at designated intervals on repetitive paths to production.

Our process begins with asking questions that will help us gather the information needed to understand each customer’s application and environment so we can properly configure and quote the appropriate electric lean cart.  For example:

  • What is the size of the facility in which the electric lean cart will be operating?
  • Are there any limitations on aisle space or turning space within the facility?
  • How many shifts will the electric lean cart be required to operate?
  • Will the electric lean cart need to tow or be towed in order to be most productive?
  • Are there any defined safety guidelines applicable to the environment in which the electric lean cart will be operating (e.g., speed limits, special safety features, etc.)?
  • For electric lean carts, how much run time per day will be required?
  • What style of electric lean cart is preferred?

Once we have gathered information, we make recommendations as to the most suitable electric lean cart for consideration, issue a quote within two hours on the recommended electric lean carts, and typically offer to demo the recommended electric lean cart model (configured to the customer’s specifications).
